Michel Martelly, a singer known for bizarre antics and controversial habits , wins the presidential vote according to the preliminary results. The other candidate was Mirlande Manigat, wife of former president Leslie Manigat, college professor and representative from the Rally of Progressive National Democrats party.
According to Democracy Now, only 1/4 of Haitians voted. Martelly is said to have links to members of death squads from Duvalier dictatorship.
Aristide's party (and the most popular in the country), Fanmi Lavalas, was banned from the election, whereas Martelly was only included after pressure on Haiti from the US and other nations and it was never formally agreed he would run.
